Causes of Eating Disorders and Obesity
An eating disorder is usually a sign of another illness that is showing itself by irregular eating habits or one’s severe distress about their size, shape and body weight. Eating disorders can be either the insufficient or excessive intake of food, but either way, when it comes to the long run, it will cause damage to one’s health and happiness. Some of the more common forms of eating disorders are Anorexia Nervosa, binge eating, or Bulima Nervosa. An eating disorder is always serious, hard to deal with and can destroy someone.
One will find that during the teenage years or the young part of adulthood is when eating disorders will rear their ugly heads, but you must remember that eating disorders are treatable. The symptoms and what follows as the aftermath can be so damaging and possibly devastating to the general well being and health of one if it is not handled correctly. An eating disorder can come on the heels with an anxiety disorder, depression, or substance abuse. They are all caused by several factors that include biochemical, cultural, environmental factors, psychological, and genetic factors.
Obesity, on the other hand, is an eating disorder that is so complicated and it involves so much body fat. Obesity is not just a visual discomfort; it has more than its fair share of health issues as it increases the risk of heart problems and other diseases like high blood pressure and diabetes. It can quickly happen if the person eats too many calories, junk food, and does not get enough physical exercise or physical activity to work off the calories. Obesity is best explained by use of your Body Mass Index (BMI) where you take one’s weight in pounds and then divide it by their height in meters and not in inches. Anyone who is an adult with a BMI over 30 is obese, a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is to be considered normal.

Causes of eating disorders
Eating disorders are a complicated problem caused by a series of factors, the primary reason of the eating disorder is yet unknown and is believed to be caused by a combination of biological, physical, environmental and other factors. Some of the causes include:
- Genetics: Many genetic factors can contribute to eating disorders. Like a genetic disease that has been identified in a family. The relationship between eating disorders and genetics are still being reviewed, but it is felt there is a link.
- Psychology: Some psychological factors can contribute to eating disorders. It is common that individuals that suffer from anxiety, depression, or obsessive-compulsive disorder have an eating disorder. Some of the other psychological factors that include poor self-esteem are negative body image of one’s self, perfectionism, impulsivity, and trouble coping with or trying to express emotions.
- Visual: Visually oriented sports like ballet, rowing, wrestling, diving, and gymnastics focus much emphasis on a lean body for improved and effective performance. It makes it common to these people getting involved in sports that have eating disorders.
- Environment: Our environment that the individual grows up in will contribute much to if they develop an eating disorder. The environmental factors include a difficult or turbulent childhood, history of sexual abuse, relationship or family problems, physical abuse, peer pressure, and exercises that have occurred by a result of someone’s weight.
- Biochemical and Biological: People who have eating disorders usually have excessive or abnormal amounts of a specific chemical that controls their sleep processes, stress, and appetite. The other biological factors include irregular hormone functions and nutritional insufficiency.

Causes of obesity
- Inactivity: If you are eating more calories than you are burning, gaining weight is unavoidable. By having an inactive lifestyle, weight gain will be rapid if you keep taking in more calories than you use up every day by your regular exercises and activities.
- Lifestyle of Family: If one’s parent or parents are obese, you have a great chance to be overweight. Genetics will not be the only factor that can make obesity run in your family; think about it; family members will usually share the same activities and eating habits.
- Unhealthy Diets: Eating food that has lots of calories like fast foods, junk food, no vegetables and fruits, and then support that with high-calorie beverages will undoubtedly increase one’s weight and contribute to obesity.
- Genetics: It can play some part in your amount of body fat that is stored in your body, and how this fat has been distributed. It will play a role in how the body burns calories during exercises and body activities, and the way it converts food into your energy.
- Age: Obesity can occur at any age in one’s life, whether it be adulthood or childhood. As one gets older, and you become less active, the changes in hormones can also cause changes in the body that increases the chances of becoming obese. Your muscle mass in your body tends to get less with age, and this reduces metabolism, which also leads to obesity and weight gain.
- Lack of Sleep: Not enough sleep, irregular sleep patterns, or too much sleep all can increase the risk of obesity. It causes the change in hormones that will enhance your appetite. It will cause you to crave the foods that are high in calories that will lead to obesity.
- Pregnancy: When one is pregnant, they tend to gain more weight, and after having the baby they seem to have trouble getting rid of that weight, and it can lead to obesity.
It is of the utmost importance to avoid the pitfalls of obesity and eating disorders. A healthy body makes one happy, and that happy person will make the world a much better place.
